She was a young, self-sufficient achiever in a time when most women married and were limited to marital obligations. In an era when women were slut shamed for having affairs, she did not allow her contentious relationship with Jawaharlal Nehru to detract from her prominence.
Padmaja Naidu’s Childhood
Padmaja Naidu was born in the city of Hyderabad in the year 1900. Sarojini Naidu, a renowned poet and Indian independence fighter, was her Bengali mother. Mutyala Govin drajulu Naidu, her Telugu father, was a physician. Jaisoorya, Leila mani, Aditya, and Ranad heera were her four siblings. Padmaja had a close association with Ruttie Petit, who eventually married Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, from the beginning of her existence. Padmaja Naidu was also close to the Nehru family, which included India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and his sister, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, the UN General Assembly’s first female president.

Her Political Career
She was a political activist who promoted Gandhi’s Khadi message and incited the Indian public to reject foreign goods. She was imprisoned in 1942 for taking part in Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India movement, which demanded “an orderly British exit” from India. Padmaja Naidu was elected to the Parliament in the post-independence era, however, she resigned owing to sickness. She rose to become the Governor of West Bengal and served in that position with distinction for a decade.
Private life
Padmaja was a close friend of Ruttie Petit, who married Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s founder, early in her life. Padmaja Naidu was close to the Nehru family, particularly Jawaharlal Nehru and his sister, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. Pandit subsequently informed Indira Gandhi’s friend and historian Pupul Jayakar that Padmaja Naidu and Nehru had lived together for a long time. Nehru refused to marry Padmaja because he didn’t want to upset Indira, his daughter. Padmaja, on the other hand, never married because she hoped Nehru would propose to her one day. Padmaja resided in a home on the Teen Murti Bhavan estate, Prime Minister Nehru’s official residence and eventually a museum devoted to his memory, until her death in 1975.
